December 1, 2024: Ishan Kishan, the dynamic Indian wicketkeeper-batter, recently bid farewell to his former Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians (MI) after being signed by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for the 2025 IPL season. The young cricketer, who had been a key figure in MI’s lineup since 2018, shared an emotional message on social media, reflecting on the memories he had with the franchise that helped shape his career.
Kishan, who was one of the most sought-after players during the IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, was initially picked up by MI. However, the auction saw intense bidding, with Punjab Kings (PBKS) also joining the fray. As the bid escalated to Rs 5 crore, MI seemed set to secure him once again. But, as the amount surged further, MI decided to pull out, and Delhi Capitals made a move. Just as it looked like PBKS would land him at Rs 10 crore, Sunrisers Hyderabad came into the picture, raising the bid to a winning Rs 11.25 crore.
In his heartfelt Instagram post, Ishan reflected on his journey with MI, writing, “So many memories with all of you, so many moments of joy, happiness, and growth. MI, Mumbai, and the Paltan will always remain in my heart. I’ve grown as a person and a player with all of you by my side. We say goodbye with memories that will stay with me for life. Thank you to the management, coaches, the players I’ve played with, and all you fans for always being in my corner.”
The move marks the end of a significant chapter for Kishan, who was a vital part of the MI squad for several seasons. Speaking in a video shared by SRH, Kishan expressed his excitement about joining the new franchise: “Hi Hyderabad, I’m super stoked to be joining this incredible team and be part of this amazing franchise. Looking forward to working with each one of you and Orange Army, let’s play with fire.”
Ishan Kishan has had a successful IPL career since debuting in 2016, representing Gujarat Lions and Mumbai Indians. Across 105 matches in the IPL, he has scored 2,644 runs at an average of 28.43, with a strike rate of 135.87 and 16 half-centuries. His best score in the IPL is 99.
During his time at MI from 2018 to 2023, Ishan accumulated 2,325 runs in 89 matches, averaging 29.80, with a strike rate of 136.84 and 15 half-centuries. His consistency and explosive batting made him an essential player for MI, contributing significantly to their success over the years.
On the international stage, Kishan has represented India in 61 matches across formats, scoring 1,807 runs at an average of 33.46, including 1 century and 14 fifties, with a best score of 210. In T20Is, he has scored 796 runs in 32 matches, with a strike rate of 124.67 and six half-centuries, highlighting his impact as a top-order batter in the shortest format.
With SRH now securing his services, Ishan Kishan will look to bring his explosive style of batting to the Orange Army in IPL 2025, making it an exciting new chapter for both him and the franchise. Fans are eagerly awaiting to see how he fares in the new environment, and his potential to shine for SRH is certainly high.
