‘Always Prove Yourself, But…’: KL Rahul Slams Selectors’ ‘Short Memory’

May 25, 2025: As Team India embarks on a new era in Test cricket under the leadership of Shubman Gill, senior players are beginning to reflect on the transition and the toll it takes. Veteran cricketer KL Rahul, who continues to be part of the Test squad, has expressed his reservations about the “rush” to groom the next generation, particularly after the retirement of stalwarts like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin.

In a candid conversation with former England captain Nasser Hussain on Sky Cricket, Rahul admitted he doesn’t mind the constant pressure to perform. However, what troubles him is the short memory of decision-makers when it comes to evaluating a player’s contributions.

“I don’t mind having to prove myself. I think that’s how sports go. You never settle… That’s the challenge of being an international athlete,” said Rahul.
“The hard part is that people who make decisions seem to forget what a player has done in the recent tournament.”

Rahul, who recently wrapped up his Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 campaign, reflected on the uncertainty surrounding India’s ODI schedule. He questioned the frequent push to ‘groom the next generation’—especially during long breaks between matches—highlighting how such moves can be disheartening for seasoned players still contributing at a high level.

“Sometimes, as a player, you sit back and think, ‘Why should there be a change when something’s working for you? Why are you thinking about the next youngster already?’” Rahul asked.

While the selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, seem keen on building a team for the future, Rahul’s comments underscore the emotional and professional challenges faced by experienced players during periods of transition.

With Rishabh Pant now the vice-captain and rising stars like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rajat Patidar, and Akash Deep gaining prominence, the competition within the squad is fiercer than ever. Still, Rahul remains focused and philosophical about his role.

“I don’t think it’s a challenge for me. It’s for everybody else.”

As India prepares for a packed Test calendar, Rahul’s reflections offer a sobering look at the realities of elite sport — where past performances can sometimes fade too quickly from memory.
