Australia Coach Mcdonald Updates Mitchell Marsh’s Fitness Following Melbourne Test

December 31, 2024: Andrew McDonald’s recent update on Mitchell Marsh’s fitness clears up concerns regarding the all-rounder’s performance and availability during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series. While Marsh, 33, hasn’t been able to bowl as much as expected during the series, McDonald emphasized that there are no injury worries. Instead, the team’s tactical approach has influenced Marsh’s role, with the need for him to bowl not arising as frequently as anticipated.

In the Melbourne Test, where Australia secured an 184-run victory and took a 2-1 lead in the series, Marsh was able to bowl 10 overs across both innings. This showed a clear improvement in his fitness, with McDonald confirming that Marsh was bowling at speeds in the 120 km/h range. Despite the limited opportunities with the ball, McDonald pointed out that Marsh has been in a “good space” and has no major concerns regarding his physical health. His recent struggles with the ball, McDonald suggested, are more about not being needed rather than any issues with his fitness.

Marsh had faced some challenges earlier in the series, particularly in the Gabba Test, where he bowled only two overs, leading to speculation about his availability for the remainder of the series. However, the coach reassured that these instances were more about the team’s strategy and conditions, not Marsh’s fitness.

Looking ahead to the Sydney Test, Australia will be hoping for continued contributions from Marsh, both with the bat and ball, as they aim to seal the series victory and extend their dominance over India.

With the win in the Melbourne Test, Australia also ended India’s hopes of qualifying for the World Test Championship Final, which further added to the significance of the match. The spotlight now shifts to the final game of the series, where both teams will look to finish on a high note, and Marsh’s fitness will likely play a crucial role if he continues to bowl more in Sydney.
