Australia Register Win Over New Zealand Women In First T20I, Ashleigh Gardner Suffers Injury

March 21, 2025: In a dramatic turn of events during the first T20I at Eden Park, Australia Women’s off-spinner Ashleigh Gardner was forced to leave the field after injuring her right index finger while attempting a catch. This injury could potentially sideline her for the remainder of the three-match series against New Zealand.

Australia secured a brilliant eight-wicket victory over New Zealand, thanks to a match-winning performance from Beth Mooney, who scored an unbeaten 75 off 42 balls. Mooney’s stellar innings in her 200th international appearance guided Australia to a comfortable win, chasing down New Zealand’s target of 138.

However, the joy of victory was overshadowed by concerns over Gardner’s injury. The 26-year-old all-rounder had bowled 14 balls in New Zealand’s innings before she attempted to catch a hard-hit return shot from Sophie Devine in the 17th over. Unfortunately, Gardner failed to hold onto the ball and was struck on her right index finger. She immediately left the field for medical attention, and the remainder of her over was completed by Georgia Wareham.

Although Gardner wasn’t required to bat during Australia’s chase, the injury to such a key player has raised concerns over her participation in the upcoming matches. Cricket Australia confirmed that Gardner had undergone scans following the incident, and her availability for the remainder of the series remains uncertain.

Gardner is one of Australia’s most valuable players, boasting an impressive record of 78 wickets and 1,411 runs in T20 internationals. Her potential absence would be a significant blow to the team, given her all-round contributions in the middle overs and lower order.

The second T20I of the series is scheduled for March 23 at Mount Maunganui, and Australia will hope for positive news regarding Gardner’s condition. If she is unavailable, her absence will be a major setback for the defending champions as they aim to secure the series against New Zealand.
