BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has denied any discussions on the matter, while reports suggest that Shubman Gill is the board’s preferred choice to succeed Rohit Sharma.

August 22, 2025: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially put an end to the rumors that Shreyas Iyer might be the next ODI captain for India. Several reports say that the middle-order batsman was about to take Rohit Sharma’s place. Devajit Saikia, the secretary of the BCCI, has said in public that these talks did not happen, though.

Saikia informed that the accusations were false and said, “I didn’t know that.” There haven’t been any talks like that.

The fight started when Iyer wasn’t chosen for India’s team for the 2025 Asia Cup, even though he had a great season with the bat. Ajit Agarkar, the principal selector, said that Iyer was not responsible for Shreyas’s absence. You can only pick 15 right now, so you’ll have to wait for him to receive his chance.

People thought he should be captain because he had been playing so brilliantly. Iyer was India’s top scorer in the 2025 Champions Trophy. He scored 243 runs in five games, with an average of 48.60 and two half-centuries. He then had the best IPL season of his career, finishing sixth in runs scored with 604, an average of 50.33, and a strike rate of 175.07.

People who work for the BCCI say that Shubman Gill is still the board’s long-term preference to handle the 50-over format, even if Iyer has been in the spotlight lately. Gill was just named vice-captain of the Asia Cup T20I team. People think that officials are supporting him since he has done well and has been chosen to be Test captain.

There will be an official decision about who would captain India’s ODI team in the future after the Asia Cup. Rohit Sharma will chat about his future plans with high-ranking officials from the BCCI.
