BCCI Takes Big Decision On Ajit Agarkar’s Contract

The BCCI has reportedly extended the chief selector’s contract until June 2026, rewarding his leadership during a period of successful team transition and major ICC trophy wins.

August 21, 2025: Reports say that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has extended chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s tenure till June 2026. The decision is a statement of confidence in the former Indian great, whose time in charge has been distinguished by a lot of success for the national side.

The Indian Express says that Agarkar agreed to the contract renewal “a few months ago” and that it was done before the 2025 Indian Premier League. A BCCI official verified the announcement, saying that India did very well under his leadership, winning the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the Champions Trophy in 2025.

The official said, “During his time, the Indian team won titles and went through changes in the Tests and T20.” The board was especially happy with how Agarkar handled a tough time when veteran players were leaving and young players were coming in across all formats.

Agarkar’s latest comments about the touchy subject of Jasprit Bumrah’s workload management come after the news of his contract renewal. At a news conference in Mumbai on Tuesday, the top selector justified the team’s tactics by saying that there is no “written plan” but a clear goal to keep the star bowler healthy for “all the big games,” such World Cups and Champions Trophies.

“Most fast bowlers are watched, and yes, because he’s hurt himself a few times in the past two or three years, they take extra care,” Agarkar added, admitting that Bumrah is very important to the squad. He made it clear that the medical team’s advice would always be the deciding factor in whether or not Bumrah could play.

The selection committee’s new, longer term will start with the Asia Cup, where India will play the UAE on September 10.
