BCCI’s ODI Retirement Prediction for Rohit Sharma Proved Premature Post Champions Trophy 2025!
June 9, 2025: Rohit Sharma, widely regarded as one of the greatest white-ball batters in cricket history, continues to make headlines. The 38-year-old Mumbai-born right-hander, who is the all-time leading run-scorer in T20 Internationals and has amassed over 11,000 ODI runs, announced his retirement from T20Is after India’s T20 World Cup triumph in June 2024 and stepped away from Test cricket in May 2025. However, he remains active in the 50-over format, aiming to represent India in the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Rohit’s recent performances in the ODI format remain impressive. His last ODI appearance came on March 9, 2025, against New Zealand in the Champions Trophy final at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, where he scored a crucial 76 runs off 83 balls, earning the Player of the Match award and helping India secure the title.
Despite this, reports emerging on June 9, 2025, suggest the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had anticipated Rohit’s retirement from ODIs following the Champions Trophy win. According to a source quoted by Hindustan Times, there have been no formal talks between Rohit and the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee about his future in the format.
“Quite frankly, many of us expected Rohit to move away from ODIs after winning the Champions Trophy. But there have been no discussions between Rohit and the selectors about his ODI career going forward,” said the BCCI insider.
While Rohit struggled with form during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he bounced back with significant contributions in the Champions Trophy, quieting his critics.
Notably, Rohit is the only captain globally to have reached the finals of all four ICC tournaments, underscoring his invaluable leadership and batting prowess. His IPL 2025 campaign was equally remarkable — playing for Mumbai Indians, he amassed 418 runs in 15 matches, including four half-centuries. During the Eliminator match against Gujarat Titans in Mullanpur on March 30, Rohit also achieved two major IPL milestones: crossing 7000 IPL runs and becoming the first Indian batter to hit 300 sixes in the tournament’s history.
As fans and cricket pundits await clarity on Rohit Sharma’s ODI future, one thing remains certain: his legacy as a white-ball cricket legend is firmly cemented.
