BGT: Skipper Rohit Provides Update On Shami’s Potential Inclusion To India’s Squad

December 18, 2024: Rohit Sharma’s comments on Mohammed Shami’s inclusion in India’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy squad emphasize a careful and measured approach toward player fitness. With Shami’s recent injury history—specifically his ankle surgery and knee complaints—Rohit made it clear that the team management would not take any risks when it comes to the pacer’s readiness. Shami has been undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), and Rohit stressed that the NCA is the key body to determine his fitness before any potential inclusion in the squad.

Rohit acknowledged Shami’s recent return to competitive cricket, including his performances for Bengal in domestic cricket and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where Shami reached the impressive milestone of 200 wickets in T20 cricket. Despite this, concerns about his knee have emerged, and the last thing the team wants is for Shami to join the squad without being fully fit, especially when the risk of injury could derail his participation during the series.

The skipper also reiterated that the door remains open for Shami, provided the NCA clears him, emphasizing that any decision would be made only if the team is “100%—but 200% sure” of his fitness. Rohit’s statement reflects a cautious and responsible approach to player selection, ensuring that the team doesn’t rush Shami back into action without being absolutely certain of his ability to perform at the highest level.

This careful management highlights the growing importance of fitness protocols and player welfare in modern cricket, with a focus on long-term performance rather than short-term gains. Rohit’s comments also underline the significance of Shami to India’s plans, as the bowler remains a key asset when fully fit, having been part of some of India’s most successful campaigns in recent years, including the 2023 ODI World Cup.

In the meantime, India will likely continue to monitor Shami’s rehabilitation progress closely, with hopes that he can make a full recovery in time to contribute to the series—should the NCA clear him for selection.
