Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) made history at the IPL 2026 mini-auction in Abu Dhabi by placing a staggering ₹25.20 crore bid for Australian all-rounder Cameron Green. However, due to new BCCI regulations, the player will only take home a fraction of that amount.

December 17, 2025: The bidding for Green began at a base price of ₹2 crore, quickly escalating into a fierce tug-of-war between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and KKR. With KKR looking to fill the void left by the retiring Andre Russell, they eventually placed the winning bid of ₹25.20 crore.

This shattered the previous overseas record of ₹24.75 crore paid for Mitchell Starc in 2024. KKR CEO Venky Mysore expressed his delight, noting that Green’s “three-dimensional” skills and existing IPL experience made him the perfect fit for the franchise.

The Twist: Why Green Earns Only ₹18 Crore

Despite the headlines, Green will not receive the full ₹25.20 crore. Under a new “Maximum Fee” rule introduced by the BCCI:

The Cap: An overseas player’s salary at a mini-auction is capped at the lower of the highest retention price (₹18 crore) or the highest auction price from the previous mega-auction.

The Destination of Excess Funds: While KKR’s auction purse will be deducted the full ₹25.20 crore, Green’s salary is capped at ₹18 crore. The remaining ₹7.20 crore will be diverted to the BCCI’s player welfare and development fund.

Rationale: This rule was implemented to prevent overseas stars from skipping mega-auctions to exploit the supply-demand imbalance of mini-auctions for inflated paydays.

A Tough Start on the Field

While Green became a multi-crorepat in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, his fortunes on the pitch took a dip on Wednesday. On the opening day of the third Ashes Test in Adelaide, Green was dismissed for a two-ball duck. He flicked a delivery from Jofra Archer toward mid-wicket, where Brydon Carse completed a spectacular diving catch.

Despite the golden duck, Green remains enthusiastic about his move to Kolkata, telling fans in a video message: “I’m so excited to get down to the Eden Gardens, get used to that atmosphere, and hope it’s a great year for us.”
