Can India Break Its Highest Test Score Again? A Look Back at Historic Innings
June 21, 2025: Highest Test Score– Shubman Gill’s reign as India’s highest Test captain got off to a dream start as his team delivered a commanding performance against Ben Stokes’ England at Headingley on Day 1 of the first Test.
Buoyed by record-breaking centuries from debut sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal and Gill himself, India reached 359/3 at stumps. Jaiswal’s maiden century in England made him only the fifth Indian batter to achieve the feat, while captain Gill scored his maiden century outside Asia and became the fifth Indian man to notch up a hundred on captaincy debut.
The dominant batting display on a batting-friendly pitch drew comparisons with India’s historic 2002 performance at Leeds, where Sachin Tendulkar famously led the charge alongside Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly, each scoring centuries in a match that ended in a resounding innings victory.
Vice-captain Rishabh Pant , giving India further momentum as they look to build on their strong start on Day 2. The team aims to eclipse their first-innings total and pressure England in what could be one of India’s highest-ever Test totals in England.
Historically, India’s only win in England after scoring 500-plus runs in the first innings was in Leeds in 2002. Their highest Test total in England remains 664 at The Oval in 2007, a match that saw Anil Kumble score his maiden Test hundred and was crucial to India’s eventual series victory.
Gill’s leadership and the young Indian batting lineup have reignited hopes of a strong series start, with fans and experts alike excited about the potential of this new era under the young captain.
