Canadian Fans Boo US Anthem Amid Trump’s Tariffs: A Viral Protest
February 3, 2025: Washington: In a striking display of dissent, Canadian hockey fans booed the US national anthem during a game in Ottawa, where Ottawa-based singer Mandia performed the “Star-Spangled Banner.” The viral incident highlights growing outrage over President Donald Trump’s newly imposed tariffs on Canadian imports, including a 25% levy on all goods and a 10% tariff on energy.

Despite the boos, Mandia continued her performance with composure and later sang “O Canada,” which was met with enthusiastic support from the crowd. The moment underscores the anger and frustration felt by Canadians over the escalating trade war with their southern neighbour.

The tariffs, effective Tuesday, have led to a national call for solidarity. Canadians are boycotting US-made goods, with grocery stores labeling locally produced items to encourage support for domestic products. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urged citizens to “stand together,” warning of tough times ahead due to job losses, rising costs, and economic uncertainty.

In retaliation, Canada has introduced a C$155 billion tariff package targeting American goods, particularly products from Republican-led states like Florida orange juice. Trudeau emphasized that while escalation is not the goal, Canada will “stand up for its people and jobs.”
The trade war has sparked criticism across the Canadian political spectrum. Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre condemned the tariffs as “massive, unjust, and unjustified,” calling for fair treatment between the two allied nations. Former Liberal Party leader Michael Ignatieff expressed concern about the trustworthiness of America under such policies, signaling a shift in Canada’s foreign policy priorities.
Economists predict significant fallout from the tariffs, including potential job losses in key sectors, higher prices for essentials like food and fuel, and disruptions to industries like automobile manufacturing. Trudeau warned that the tariffs would not only harm Canadians but also have “real consequences” for Americans.
