Champions Trophy: Babar Azam Recalls 2017 Triumph Against India
February 19, 2025: Ahead of the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 opener against New Zealand, Pakistan batter Babar Azam looked back on his unforgettable memories from the 2017 Champions Trophy final, where his team triumphed over arch-rivals India to win the trophy for the first time in Pakistan's history. The 2017 victory was a pivotal moment in Babar's career, helping him announce himself on the international cricket scene.
In the final at The Oval, Babar contributed with a steady 46 off 52 balls, as Pakistan secured a massive 180-run win over India, a result that remains etched in the memories of cricket fans across Pakistan. Reflecting on that day, Babar shared how it was both exciting and nerve-wracking to play against India in such a high-stakes match. He acknowledged the crucial roles played by Fakhar Zaman, who scored a match-winning 114, as well as the fiery spells by Mohammad Amir and Hasan Ali, whose performances sealed the victory for Pakistan.
Babar, who was relatively young at the time, emphasized how the win marked a new chapter in his career, filled with joy and celebration. He also acknowledged that while the team has changed since 2017, with only a few players from that victorious squad still in the side, the belief, confidence, and execution remain strong.
As Pakistan takes on New Zealand in the 2025 tournament, Babar enters the competition as the world’s top-ranked ODI batter, a position he’s held since 2021. He shared that the responsibility of being a senior player motivates him to perform at his best and help Pakistan succeed, aiming to break the team’s recent disappointing tournament records. Despite recent setbacks, including group-stage exits at the last two ICC Men's Cricket World Cups and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2022, Babar remains focused on learning from past mistakes and moving forward with a positive mindset.
A key advantage for Pakistan in this tournament is the home advantage, as matches will be hosted in Pakistan, including Babar’s hometown of Lahore. Babar expressed how important it is to play in familiar conditions, where the team understands the pitches and conditions better. He also spoke about the significance of hosting the competition, highlighting how cricket unites the nation, with fans all over Pakistan eagerly supporting the team.
With high hopes and the support of a passionate fanbase, Babar Azam and Pakistan will look to build on their 2017 glory and aim for success in the 2025 ICC Men's Champions Trophy.
