February 21, 2025: Former India spinner Piyush Chawla has commended Shubman Gill for his composed and mature innings during India’s challenging run chase in a recent match. Gill’s steady performance was crucial in helping India to victory, particularly on a difficult pitch, showcasing his adaptability and leadership under pressure.
While speaking on Jio Hotstar, Chawla praised the young batter for his ability to assess the match situation and lead the team with responsibility. “It was an impressive knock because it wasn’t the easiest pitch to bat on. When you’re chasing around 230 runs on such a surface, you need someone to stay till the end, and that’s exactly what Shubman Gill did,” Chawla said. He further emphasized that Gill’s decision-making, especially his ability to play responsibly when boundaries weren’t easy to come by, was a testament to his maturity as a player.
Chawla highlighted that Gill displayed excellent game awareness, carefully rotating the strike when required and focusing on building partnerships rather than aggressively seeking boundaries. “That is the sign of a mature player,” he noted.
As the vice-captain of the Indian team, Gill took on the leadership role during a difficult phase of the match when India had lost a few wickets. Chawla expressed admiration for how Gill anchored the innings, ultimately guiding India to a well-earned win. “At one point, India was in a tricky situation, but the way he anchored the innings and stayed till the end was very, very impressive,” he concluded.
