Champions Trophy: Rohit Sharma Reveals Axar Patel Was Told To Bat At Number 5 No Matter What
March 3, 2025: Ahead of the highly anticipated semi-final clash against Australia in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, India skipper Rohit Sharma shared insights into the role and expectations set for all-rounder Axar Patel. Rohit revealed that Axar had been informed by the team management during India's ODI series against England that, regardless of the situation, he would bat at number five.
This clear directive has paid off as Axar has showcased his growing batting skills. In India's final group stage match against New Zealand, where the team was in early trouble at 30/3, Axar stepped in to stabilize the innings. He formed a crucial 98-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer, contributing 42 runs off 61 balls, including three fours and a six. While batting under pressure, Axar’s positive approach and ability to take on the game stood out, which aligns with the team's strategy of using him in the middle order.
Rohit lauded Axar's improvement over the past year, particularly with the bat, calling it “superb to watch.” The captain highlighted that Axar’s aggression and ability to play shots freely make him a vital asset in the middle order. Despite the situation, the team management’s belief in Axar’s ability to handle pressure and play positively has been a key factor in his success at number five.
Axar’s form as a number five batsman has been impressive. Since 2016, he has batted at this position on seven occasions, amassing 227 runs at a strike rate of 90.43 and an average of 37.83. His standout performances include a vital 52 runs off 47 balls in the ODI series against England, along with an unbeaten 41 runs in another match. Rohit also recalled a crucial knock from Axar in the 2022 T20 World Cup Final, where his composed batting helped India recover after a series of quick wickets.
Rohit emphasized that Axar’s ability to step up whenever needed, like he did in the World Cup Final, shows his resilience and the growth in his game. "Whenever he's gotten an opportunity, he's shown that he can do just a bit more than what we expect him to do," said Rohit. "It's always nice to have those kinds of players in your squad."
As India prepares for the semi-final against Australia, Axar Patel’s role in the middle order will be crucial, and his recent form is a promising sign for the team as they look to continue their campaign in the Champions Trophy.
