Champions Trophy: Shaheen Afridi Expresses Confidence In Fitness Ahead Of Clash With New Zealand
February 18, 2025: Pakistan speedster Shaheen Afridi has brushed off any doubts ‘surrounding his fitness ahead of the Champions Trophy opener against New Zealand in Karachi. Despite concerns raised over the fitness of Pakistan’s key fast bowlers, including Afridi, Naseem Shah, and Haris Rauf, Afridi exuded confidence in his form and fitness, stating that he feels “fully fit” and in “good rhythm.”
In an interview before the crucial clash, Afridi acknowledged that fast bowlers often experience “niggles” but praised the team’s physios for keeping the players in top shape. The criticism surrounding the trio’s fitness grew after Haris Rauf suffered a side strain during Pakistan’s opening match in the ODI tri-nation series. However, Afridi remained unfazed, emphasizing that fast bowlers must always bowl in partnerships, and his teammates were also in great physical condition.
Afridi also addressed speculation regarding his bowling speed after recovering from a knee injury in 2022. Once known for his fiery pace, Shaheen’s speeds are now often clocked between 135-140 kph, sparking discussions about a potential dip in velocity. However, the left-arm pacer confidently stated that he did not feel a drop in his pace and that it had not hindered his wicket-taking ability. He attributed variations in speed to natural fatigue but emphasized that his main goal was to meet the team’s requirements, regardless of speed.
As the tournament’s opening match against New Zealand approaches, Shaheen Afridi’s self-assurance about his fitness and form provides a positive sign for Pakistan as they look to defend their Champions Trophy title.
