Champions Trophy: Spencer Johnson Opens Up About Replacing Mitchell Starc In Australia’s Champions Trophy Squad

February 13, 2025: Australia’s young pacer Spencer Johnson has shared his thoughts on replacing the experienced Mitchell Starc in the Australian squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Johnson acknowledged the challenge ahead, as Starc, who has been a cornerstone of Australia’s pace attack, withdrew from the tournament due to personal reasons. With the squad already dealing with injuries to Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Marsh, Starc’s absence adds to Australia’s challenges as they head into the tournament, set to begin on February 19, 2025 in Pakistan and the UAE.

Johnson, who will take on a similar role to Starc’s in the squad, spoke candidly about the responsibility he now carries. “It’s obviously something I’ve pictured in my mind, to come in and play a similar role to him. There were a few nerves there and obviously big shoes to fill,” Johnson said, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity. “I think I am better for the run. It’s only my third ODI, hopefully a few more, and I’ll be able to replicate some of the stuff he’s done,” he added.

Starc, known for his aggressive left-arm pace, had shown signs of discomfort during the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, which led to his decision to step away from the tournament. While his absence is a significant loss for Australia, Johnson aims to bring a similar attacking style to the team, particularly on the flatter pitches of Pakistan, where conditions are expected to differ from what Johnson has faced so far.

Reflecting on the playing conditions in Pakistan, Johnson said, “Guys like Trent Boult and Starcy, left-armers who are aggressive, hopefully, it’s what I can bring to Pakistan. I think this wicket is not what we’re going to get over in Pakistan. It was nice to bowl on early with the new ball, and there was a bit of nip and carry. But [Pakistan] will be different to what we got here, potentially a bit flatter.”

As Johnson looks to fill the big shoes left by Starc, Australia’s squad for the Champions Trophy features several key players, including Steve Smith (C), Glenn Maxwell, Aaron Hardie, and Adam Zampa. With Australia facing multiple injuries, Johnson’s performance will be crucial in determining the team’s pace attack for the tournament.
