Cricket Fraternity Mourns The Passing Of Syed Abid Ali Saheb

March 13, 2025: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) expressed its condolences following the passing of former Indian all-rounder Syed Abid Ali on March 12, 2025, as confirmed in a press release.

A versatile cricketer who made his mark during the 1960s and 70s, Syed Abid Ali played a pivotal role in India’s cricketing successes. He represented the country in 29 Test matches and 5 One Day Internationals, showcasing his all-round skills as a valuable player for the team. Abid Ali’s contributions were particularly significant in India’s historic Test series victories in England and the West Indies in 1971, where he excelled in all aspects of the game—batting, bowling, and fielding.

His exceptional dedication and lion-hearted approach on the field made him a respected figure in the Indian cricketing community. The BCCI President, Roger Binny, paid tribute to the late cricketer, stating, “Shri Syed Abid Ali was a true all-rounder, a cricketer who embodied the spirit of the game. His contributions to India’s historic victories in the 1970s will always be remembered. His dedication and versatility made him stand out. My deepest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.”

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia also expressed his thoughts on Abid Ali’s passing, saying, “Shri Syed Abid Ali’s all-round skills and his contribution to Indian cricket are highly valued. He was a true gentleman of the game. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.”

Former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin took to social media to mourn the loss, posting, “Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Syed Abid Ali Saheb. His contributions to the game and his unwavering passion for cricket will always be remembered.”

Veteran commentator Harsha Bhogle also shared his memories of Abid Ali, writing, “My first cricket hero. Rejoiced as a child when he had a great debut against Australia, was overjoyed when he scored the winning runs against England in 1971. Great trier, big-hearted man. Khudahafiz Abid Chicha.”

Syed Abid Ali’s passing leaves behind a lasting legacy in Indian cricket, one defined by his unwavering commitment, versatile skills, and significant role in India’s cricketing achievements during a crucial era.
