Bumrah Breaks Kapil Dev’s Record With Five Wicket Haul at Lord’s, Yet Does Not Celebrate the Win! Here's Why
London | July 12, 2025 –
Jasprit Bumrah delivered a masterclass in fast bowling on Day 2 of the third Test against England at Lord’s, grabbing a brilliant 5/74 to put India in command. His effort helped bowl England out for 387 and earned him a place on the Lord’s Honours Board for the very first time. The five-wicket haul also saw him surpass Kapil Dev’s record for the most five-fors by an Indian bowler in overseas Tests.

But while the cricketing world celebrated, fans were left puzzled by Bumrah’s uncharacteristically muted reaction. There was no fist-pump, no wide grin — just a quiet return to his mark.
“The reality is I was tired,” Bumrah clarified at the post-day press conference. “I’m not 21-22 anymore that I’ll jump around. I was happy I contributed, but I just wanted to bowl the next ball.”
The 31-year-old pace spearhead had missed the Edgbaston Test due to workload management, but he roared back in style at Lord’s. His morning burst dismantled England’s middle order, including prized wickets of Ben Stokes, Joe Root, and Chris Woakes. His final scalp, Jofra Archer, came with a vicious in-seamer that flattened the stumps — sealing his 15th career five-wicket haul in Tests.

Notably, 13 of those 15 have come away from home, breaking Kapil Dev’s record of 12 overseas five-fors, a feat Bumrah achieved in just 36 Tests outside India.
Despite England’s lower-order resistance — Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse stitched together an 84-run stand — Bumrah remained clinical. He showed why he’s still India’s most feared pacer across conditions, with speed, seam, and supreme control.
India’s response:
India ended the day at 145/3, with KL Rahul unbeaten on 53 and Rishabh Pant battling through a finger injury at 19*. Jofra Archer, making his Test comeback after four years, dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal early. Karun Nair impressed with a composed 40 before falling to a stunning Joe Root catch, while Shubman Gill managed only 16.

Legacy Watch:
With each Test, Bumrah is cementing his legacy among India’s greatest fast bowlers. Breaking Kapil Dev’s record at the very ground that defines cricketing excellence — Lord’s — adds another jewel to his crown. And even if there was no wild celebration, the achievement speaks for itself.
