Cameron Green Slams Century For Gloucestershire, Bolsters Case For WTC Final Selection

May 18, 2025: Australian all-rounder Cameron Green has made a compelling case for a recall to the national team ahead of the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa, following a dominant century for Gloucestershire in the County Championship.

Playing his fifth match since returning from back surgery, the 25-year-old struck his second ton of the season—this time against Kent—reaffirming his batting prowess and timely form. His explosive innings was marked by clean strokeplay and confident shot selection, culminating in a powerful boundary that brought up his hundred. He followed the milestone with a proud, statuesque celebration, raising his bat and helmet to a cheering crowd.

Green had earlier marked his comeback with a century against the same opposition in mid-April but was forced to retire hurt due to cramping. A subsequent slump followed, with four low scores. However, his latest performance suggests a return to form just weeks before the WTC showdown at Lord’s.

“It was amazing. I definitely wanted a good score in front of the fans. They’ve come out in force in the two games I’ve been here, and I’d never really experienced chanting of my name before, so that was awesome to experience. A really cool moment,” Green said to The Sydney Morning Herald.

He added, “I feel sorry, in a way, for doing it against the same opposition. But you take them when they come… the crowd got up, and you felt like you were really on top of them.”

Green’s international career so far has seen him adapt to a wide range of roles, batting in positions from No. 1 to No. 8 across T20Is and ODIs. This versatility, while a strength, has also challenged his consistency. Nonetheless, his recent red-ball performances in England strengthen his claim for a key role in Australia’s Test squad.

Meanwhile, teammate Marnus Labuschagne had a less memorable outing. The experienced batter was dismissed for a duck after just seven balls, edging a delivery from South Australia pacer Harry Conway to Justin Broad.

With Green peaking at the right time, Australian selectors now face a pleasant dilemma as they shape their squad for the WTC final at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground.
