“Control His Nightlife”: Yograj Singh’s Honest Advice To Yuvraj On Abhishek Sharma’s Rise
March 28, 2025: Abhishek Sharma’s meteoric rise in Indian cricket has captured the attention of fans and experts alike, with the young left-hander becoming a vital figure in India’s plans for the 2026 T20 World Cup. But behind his on-field brilliance lies a story of discipline, mentorship—and a strong influence from cricketing legend Yuvraj Singh and his father, Yograj Singh.
In a recent interview, Yograj Singh opened up about the guidance he offered his son Yuvraj when it came to nurturing Abhishek during the COVID-19 lockdown.
“When Abhishek was playing, I told Yuvraj—if you can control his nightlife, he will turn out fine,” said Yograj. “Yuvraj took that to heart. He didn’t let Abhishek roam around. He kept his shoes and slippers in his hands… He made sure Abhishek stayed focused. Wild horses need to be tamed by holding their mane tightly.”
Yuvraj didn’t just offer advice—he took action. He kept both Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill at his home during the lockdown, ensuring they followed strict training routines and stayed grounded.

Abhishek, who hails from Punjab like his mentor, had a phenomenal IPL 2024 season, scoring 484 runs in 16 innings at a jaw-dropping strike rate of 204.21. His opening partnership with Travis Head became one of the highlights of the tournament. Later that year, he made his international debut and has since scored two T20I centuries, averaging 33.43 with a strike rate of 193.84 in 17 matches.
Former SRH captain Kane Williamson has also praised Abhishek’s rare talent.
“He’s a natural timer of the ball,” Williamson told ESPNcricinfo. “He generates power not through brute force, but with timing and placement. His ability to change his shot last minute and find gaps all over the ground is very rare—it’s almost like Heinrich Klaasen, though different in style.”
Williamson added that SRH had spotted his potential early on when they picked him up from Delhi Capitals ahead of IPL 2019, even though he had played only three IPL games by then.
As Abhishek continues to impress on the big stage, it’s evident that discipline, mentorship, and natural talent have shaped him into one of the most exciting young batters in world cricket.
