Anil Kumble Questions Decision to Bat Virat Kohli at No. 3

Mumbai, October 18, 2024: Former Indian spinner Anil Kumble has criticized the Indian team’s decision to send star batter Virat Kohli to bat at number three during the first Test against New Zealand, asserting that Kohli is best suited for the number four spot. Kumble’s comments came after Kohli was dismissed for a nine-ball duck by New Zealand pacer William O’Rourke in the ninth over of the innings.

New Zealand claimed the crucial wicket of Kohli after dismissing skipper Rohit Sharma. Attempting to defend a delivery just short of length on the off-stump, Kohli encountered extra bounce, resulting in the ball glancing off his top glove to Phillips at leg gully. Speaking to JioCinema, Kumble emphasized that Kohli’s strengths lie in the number four position, and India missed the solid presence of someone like Cheteshwar Pujara at number three.

“Virat Kohli should have batted at No. 4, he is your number one batter at that position. For the number three position, [you need] someone like Cheteshwar Pujara, who did so well for so many years playing there,” Kumble remarked. “He [Pujara] would have allowed the ball to come on, and that’s where you miss someone with that kind of approach today. India is certainly in a spot of bother here.”

Kohli’s record at number four is impressive, with 7,355 runs at an average of 52.53 in 91 Tests, including 25 centuries. However, his performance at number three has been less favorable, scoring just 97 runs in seven innings with an average of 16.16. Kumble’s comments highlighted that Kohli’s switch from his usual position may have contributed to India’s struggles in the match.

India’s decision to bat first under overcast, pace-friendly conditions backfired as they were bowled out for a mere 46 runs, with only Rishabh Pant (20) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (13) managing to reach double digits. New Zealand bowlers Matt Henry (5/15) and William O’Rourke (4/22) capitalized on the conditions to dismantle India’s batting lineup.

New Zealand responded strongly, finishing their innings at 180/3 with a lead of 134 runs. Devon Conway led the charge with a solid 91 off 105 balls, supported by a 75-run partnership with Will Young (33). Despite a couple of wickets from Indian spinners, Rachin Ravindra (22*) and Daryl Mitchell (14*) ensured the visitors maintained control.
