South Africa pacer Gerald Coetzee has received a reprimand and a demerit point added to his disciplinary record following an incident that happened during the fourth T20I against India in Johannesburg.
While bowling the 15th over of the Indian innings, Coetzee is noted to have made an inappropriate comment to the umpire after the latter signalled one of his deliveries as a wide.
The 24-year-old admitted to breaching the ICC’s Level 1 offence under the ICC Code of Conduct, specifically Article 2.1.7, which pertains to conduct contrary to the spirit of the game. As a result, Coetzee has been reprimanded, and a demerit point has been added to his record. Additionally, he faced a 50% fine on his match fee, as imposed by the match referee, Andy Pycroft.
This reprimand comes after a disappointing 3-1 series loss for South Africa in the T20I series against India, where Coetzee’s actions were one of the few negative headlines. Despite this, Coetzee has been named in South Africa’s squad for the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka, set to start on November 27.
