ENG vs IND 1st Test Day 4: Twin Tons by Pant and Rahul Set Up Thrilling Final Day as England Respond Strongly

India set a formidable 371-run target after twin centuries from Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul; England end Day 4 at 21/0 in tense Headingley finish

Leeds, June 23, 2025 – Day 4 of the first Test between England and India at Headingley delivered high drama, records, and a potential setup for a classic finish. After centuries from Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul put India in command, England responded with calm resilience, ending the day at 21 without loss, chasing 371 for victory.

The day started poorly for India as captain Shubman Gill was dismissed early, dragging the ball onto his stumps in just the second over. However, what followed was a remarkable 195-run partnership between KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant.

Pant created history by becoming only the second wicketkeeper in Test cricket history to score centuries in both innings of a Test match. KL Rahul, equally impressive, notched up his third century as an opener in England, the most by any Indian.

Despite the heroics, India’s lower order collapsed yet again, losing six wickets for just 31 runs, and were bowled out for 364. Set a daunting target, England openers Zak Crawley (12)* and Ben Duckett (9)* safely negotiated six overs to close the day without damage.

India’s attack was led by Jasprit Bumrah, who looked threatening with the new ball, while Mohammed Siraj and Ravindra Jadeja supported from the other end. Notably, some strategic decisions — like bringing Jadeja in too early — raised eyebrows as England focused on seeing out the day rather than chasing.

Earlier, Duckett was seen employing tactical time-wasting, avoiding Bumrah’s overs and frustrating the Indian side. But overall, England batted with maturity to set up a final day that promises to be a thrilling battle of nerves.

With 350 runs to defend and 10 wickets to take, India have their task cut out, but with Bumrah and a capable attack, the match is finely poised.
