From Mumbai to Chelmsford: Is Tilak Varma India’s Next Big Thing?
June 24, 2025: Indian batting prodigy Tilak Varma kicked off his County Championship journey in spectacular fashion, notching a memorable century for Hampshire against Essex at Chelmsford. Walking in at No. 4, Tilak displayed rock-solid technique and remarkable shot selection, ending Day 2 unbeaten on 98. Early on Day 3, he reached his maiden County century with a well-run double, delighting fans and teammates alike.
However, his knock came to an end at exactly 100, dismissed by South African spinner Simon Harmer after a 241-ball stay that featured 11 crisp boundaries and three massive sixes.

Tilak stitched a vital 133-run stand with England’s Liam Dawson, who went on to score his 18th first-class ton. Tilak’s innings stood out for his elegant cover drives and aggressive footwork, captivating the crowd.
This ton adds to Tilak’s growing first-class credentials, which include hundreds for Hyderabad, India A, and in the Duleep Trophy. Having joined Hampshire for four County matches, Tilak’s start has been nothing short of a statement.
Despite a quiet IPL 2025 season with Mumbai Indians—343 runs in 16 matches—Tilak’s County performance reaffirms his potential. In the IPL, he has racked up 1499 runs in 54 matches, with eight fifties and a solid strike rate of 144.41.
Internationally, Tilak has donned the Indian jersey 29 times, with 25 appearances in T20Is, scoring 749 runs, including back-to-back centuries against South Africa in 2024.
