May 19, 2025 : Former Australian cricketer and seasoned coach Tom Moody has lauded Gujarat Titans’ opening duo, Sai Sudharsan and skipper Shubman Gill, for their evolving batting brilliance in IPL 2025. According to Moody, the pair has learned to “shift through gears” with a technique that equips them to withstand any pressure.

On a sweltering Sunday in Delhi, Gill (93*) and Sudharsan (108*) showcased a flawless chase against Delhi Capitals’ 200-run target, leading Gujarat to a thumping 10-wicket victory in the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League. The duo’s dominant partnership not only secured a playoff berth but also propelled GT to the top of the points table.

Both batters have crossed the 600-run mark this season—becoming the only opening pair across the ten franchises to do so. Their explosive partnership has become the blueprint of Gujarat’s success, built on sound technique, rapid running between the wickets, and timely power-hitting.

“They seem to really understand each other’s game,” Moody told ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out. “One covers for the other if one’s off to a flyer. There’s a rhythm to their approach, and it’s reflected throughout the season. Their classical strokeplay stands out.”

The numbers back their dominance. Gill has smashed 54 fours and 23 sixes, while Sudharsan leads the charts with 68 boundaries alongside 20 maximums. Only Yashasvi Jaiswal of Rajasthan Royals has hit more fours than the GT captain.

Moody praised their progression, stating, “They’re no longer players with just three gears. They now shift seamlessly through five, depending on the match situation. That’s a sign of maturity and skill development.”

Their 205-run opening stand against Delhi Capitals is their highest this season, contributing to an aggregate of 839 runs at a formidable average of 76.27—firmly establishing them as the most prolific pair of IPL 2025.

Former India spinner Piyush Chawla echoed the sentiment, highlighting their sharp game awareness. “They’re exceptional at turning good balls into singles, which frustrates bowlers looking for dot balls or wickets. And when there’s a boundary opportunity, they rarely miss.”

Chawla added, “Even on tricky surfaces, their running between the wickets eases the pressure. Their understanding, timing, and execution are what set them apart.”
