Head Coach Gambhir Backs KL Rahul Ahead Of Second Test, Says "You Don't Pick Players Based On Social Media"

After a disappointing performance in the opening Test, where Rahul struggled against New Zealand's pace attack—particularly William O'Rourke, who dismissed him in both innings—the batter faced significant criticism from fans and analysts alike. Many questioned his place in the playing XI, especially given the team's overall struggles, including a humiliating total of 46 runs in their first innings.

In response to the mounting pressure on Rahul, Gambhir defended the player, emphasizing that decisions about team selection should not be swayed by social media or public opinion. He stated, "Social media doesn't matter one bit. You don't pick players based on social media, even what the experts are saying or think. It is important to what the team management thinks and what the leadership group."

Gambhir acknowledged Rahul's potential, citing his impressive 68 runs off 43 balls against Bangladesh in Kanpur as evidence of his capability in challenging conditions.

Despite India's eight-wicket loss to the Black Caps, which saw New Zealand rise to fourth place in the standings with a 44.44% win-loss ratio, India remains at the top, although their percentage has decreased to 68.06%.

Gambhir’s backing of Rahul signals a commitment to retaining experienced players as the team looks to bounce back in the upcoming Tests, with the focus now shifting to more resilient performances to maintain their position in the World Test Championship race. With two matches against New Zealand and a five-match series against Australia looming, the team is keen to restore their form and secure their place in next year’s final.
