India loses 2 WTC points for slow over-rate in Centurion Test

The International Cricket Council (ICC) declared on Friday that Team India, led by Rohit Sharma, had lost two significant points in the ICC World Test Championship due to their slow over-rate in the opening Test match against South Africa in Centurion. “India have been fined 10 per cent of their match fee and penalised two ICC World Test Championship points for maintaining a slow over-rate against South Africa in the first Test in Centurion,” the International Cricket Council said in a statement. Additionally, India was fined 10% of their match fee for bowling two overs short of the required total. After time allowances were taken into account, it was determined that India was two overs short of the target. Chris Broad of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees then imposed sanctions.

“In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time,” the ICC said in a statement. Additionally, a side loses one point for each over that is short according to Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions. As such, India’s total points have been reduced by two World Test Championship points.”There was no need for a formal hearing because India captain Rohit Sharma accepted the suggested punishment after entering a guilty plea.

India fell to fifth position with 16 points from three Tests and a points percentage of 44.44 after the Test loss.
