India Tightens Grip on Headingley Test: Bumrah’s Fifer, KL Rahul’s Calm Give Visitors 96-Run Lead
📍Leeds, June 22, 2025 — India ended Day 3 of the first Test against England with a solid upper hand, courtesy of Jasprit Bumrah’s five-wicket haul and a composed unbeaten 47 by KL Rahul, stretching their second-innings lead to 96 runs before rain halted play at Headingley.

Bowling out England for 465, India managed a slender six-run lead after the first innings, with Bumrah leading the charge (5/83), well supported by Prasidh Krishna (3 wickets) and Mohammed Siraj (2 wickets). England’s innings was bolstered by Ollie Pope’s gritty 106 and Harry Brook’s heartbreaking 99, but the hosts fell just short of India’s 471.
In response, India began their second innings with caution. Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed early for 4, but KL Rahul and debutant Sai Sudharsan steadied the ship with a 66-run partnership. Sudharsan showed promise before falling to Ben Stokes for 32, but Rahul held firm with a fluent knock that included seven boundaries.
India were 90/2 in 23.5 overs when rain brought early stumps. Alongside Rahul was captain Shubman Gill, unbeaten on 6. The visitors ended the day with a healthy overall lead of 96 runs, setting up a potentially decisive Day 4.
Rain made intermittent appearances throughout the day, but it was a steady drizzle in the evening session that forced umpires to call for covers and bring the day to a premature end. Still, India’s dominance was clear.
📌 What’s Next?
With a strong base set, India will look to bat deep on Day 4 to set a formidable fourth-innings target. All eyes will be on Rahul and Gill to capitalise on the advantage and put pressure back on England.
