IPL 2025 Mega Auction Speculations: Will Rohit Sharma Leave Mumbai Indians for RCB?

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Mega Auction approaches, all eyes are on the future of star batter Rohit Sharma and his association with Mumbai Indians (MI). After leading MI to an impressive five IPL titles, Rohit’s role in the team became uncertain when the franchise replaced him as captain with Hardik Pandya last season. The trade of Hardik Pandya from Gujarat Titans (GT) to MI stirred controversy, with many fans expressing outrage, deeming the decision disrespectful towards Rohit.

Despite the backlash and MI’s poor performance last season, which saw them finish last on the points table, rumors of a rift between Rohit and Hardik have been making rounds. Now, with the auction looming, there’s growing speculation about Rohit possibly entering the auction pool, which could trigger one of the biggest shake-ups in IPL history.

Adding fuel to the speculation, former India batter Mohammad Kaif recently suggested that Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) should aim to secure Rohit Sharma in the 2025 mega auction. Such a move would undoubtedly create headlines and shift the balance of power within the IPL.

However, RCB legend AB de Villiers cast doubt on the possibility, stating that Rohit joining RCB is highly unlikely. During a live YouTube Q&A, De Villiers said, “I almost laughed at the Rohit comment. That will be quite a story if Rohit moves from Mumbai Indians to RCB. Wow! Imagine the headlines. It will be bigger than Hardik Pandya’s move. But if Rohit moves from Mumbai to join his rivals in RCB…oh my god! I don’t think there is an option there. I give that a 0.1 percent chance.”

De Villiers also backed Faf du Plessis to continue leading RCB, despite his age. He expressed that even Virat Kohli would support Faf, emphasizing the veteran South African’s experience and impact on the team.

“Age is just a number, guys. I don’t see why his turning 40 would be an issue. He has been there for a few seasons, and the players are used to him. I understand there has been pressure because he hasn’t won the trophy for RCB, but he has been exceptional as a player. I think Virat will back him with all his experience,” De Villiers added.
