IPL 2025: Virat Kohli Set To Make History, Needs 38 Runs To Join Elite List Against KKR

March 22, 2025: Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) star Virat Kohli is on the brink of creating history as the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season kicks off. The legendary batter needs just 38 more runs in the IPL opener against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to become the third player in IPL history to score 1,000 or more runs against KKR. Kohli has amassed 962 runs from 31 innings at an average of 38.48, including one century and six fifties.

The record for most runs against KKR is held by David Warner, who has scored 1,093 runs in 28 innings at an average of 43.72, with two centuries and six fifties. Mumbai Indians’ captain Rohit Sharma follows closely behind with 1,070 runs from 34 innings at an average of 39.62, including one century and six fifties.

Kohli has already scored over 1,000 runs against three other teams: Delhi Capitals (DC), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and Punjab Kings (PBKS). No player in IPL history has scored 1,000 or more runs against more than two teams.

Kohli Eyes Milestone 13,000 Runs

Kohli is also chasing another remarkable achievement in the IPL. He needs just 114 more runs to become the first Indian batter to score 13,000 runs in T20s. Currently, Kohli has 12,886 runs from 382 innings, averaging 41.43, with nine centuries and 97 fifties. A mere 28 runs will also push him past David Warner (12,913 runs), moving Kohli into the fifth spot on the list of the highest run-scorers in T20 history (across franchise cricket, domestic T20s, and T20Is).

Chasing Records: Kohli Closing In on Dhawan’s IPL Milestone

In yet another record chase, Kohli is set to surpass Shikhar Dhawan’s IPL record for the most runs in successful run chases. Currently, Kohli has 2,146 runs from 58 innings in successful chases, including two centuries and 13 fifties. Dhawan leads this category with 2,159 runs from 53 innings, which includes one century and 19 fifties. If Kohli scores just 14 runs in a successful chase during IPL 2025 and RCB wins, he will take the top spot.

With multiple records within reach, the IPL 2025 opener promises to be a milestone moment for the 36-year-old Kohli, as he continues to cement his place as one of the all-time greats in T20 cricket.
