Ponting Calls for Focus as Punjab Kings Regroup After Defeat to Delhi Capitals

Despite already securing a spot in the IPL 2025 playoffs, Punjab Kings (PBKS) faced a setback in their push for a top-two finish after losing to Delhi Capitals by six wickets at Jaipur’s Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Saturday.

Led by captain Shreyas Iyer’s composed 53 off 34 and a late onslaught from Marcus Stoinis (44* off 16), PBKS posted a strong total of 206/8 in 20 overs. However, Delhi Capitals responded effectively, chasing down the target with three balls to spare.

In a post-match address, PBKS head coach Ricky Ponting acknowledged the team’s shortcomings and urged them to fully reset ahead of their final league game against the Mumbai Indians on May 26.

“Tonight is a good example of how T20 cricket works—if you’re slightly off in any department, it can cost you the game,” Ponting said. “We were probably a bit off across all three areas.”

While disappointed with the loss, Ponting praised individual performances. He credited Iyer for his steady innings and lauded Stoinis for his powerful finish that lifted the team to a defendable total. He also highlighted Harpreet Brar’s bowling on a tough wicket, along with a strong opening spell from Arshdeep Singh.

“We didn’t quite get the big partnerships or a player going on for a massive score, which might have made the difference,” he added.

Looking ahead, Ponting emphasized the importance of moving on quickly. “Forget about this game tomorrow, but come Monday, we need to be 100% locked in and ready to go.”

Stoinis echoed the sentiment, noting how the next match against Mumbai Indians is crucial to their hopes of securing a top-two finish. “We’ve already qualified, but finishing higher gives us a big advantage. We’re playing good cricket, and different players are stepping up. That’s important going into the playoffs.”

Punjab Kings will aim to bounce back when they take on Mumbai Indians in their final league match on May 26.
