“Truly Special”: RCB Skipper Rajat Patidar Reflects on Receiving Captaincy Plaque from Virat Kohli

May 16, 2025: Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain Rajat Patidar opened up about the emotional moment he received the captaincy plaque from franchise legend Virat Kohli, calling it an unforgettable experience in his cricketing journey.

Speaking on the latest episode of the RCB Podcast, Patidar reflected on being named captain ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season and the significance of being introduced to fans by Kohli during the RCB Unbox event.

“It is very special,” Patidar said. “When I received the plaque from Virat bhai, that moment became unforgettable. I’ve always looked up to him as a batting idol, and to hear him speak about me in front of so many fans meant a lot. It always will be a very special memory.”

Patidar recalled how the weight of the responsibility began to sink in only after conversations with his family and others around him. “Initially, I didn’t feel much. My nature is such that I don’t express too much. But once people started congratulating me and my father called, I realized how big a role it is. It’s not easy to get an opportunity like this.”

He also praised Kohli’s continued support and presence in the squad, emphasizing the value of learning from someone with Kohli’s vast experience. “Having him around is a big opportunity. No one brings the experience or insight that he does, whether it’s in batting, leadership, or mindset. I aim to learn as much as I can.”

Despite a dip in form over the last few games, Patidar remains focused. He has scored 239 runs in 11 matches this season at an average of 23.90 and a strike rate of 140.58, including two half-centuries.

RCB currently sits in second place on the points table with eight wins and three losses. They will resume their campaign against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Bengaluru on Saturday.
