India’s Playing XI for 2nd Test vs England: If Bumrah is Rested, These Two Pacers May Get Chance

With Jasprit Bumrah unlikely to feature in the 2nd Test at Edgbaston due to workload concerns, India’s bench strength gears up—Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep bowl extended spells in the nets.

June 28, 2025: As India prepares for the second Test of the England series at Edgbaston starting July 2, all eyes are on pace ace Jasprit Bumrah, whose participation appears uncertain. According to reports from ESPNCricinfo, the team management is monitoring Bumrah’s workload and may rest him for this match, as part of a pre-planned rotation policy.

Bumrah, who claimed a five-wicket haul at Headingley, bowled nearly 44 overs across both innings. Though present during India’s five-hour closed-door practice session on Friday, he neither bowled nor batted—suggesting that a period of rest could be imminent.

While no official confirmation has come, insiders suggest Bumrah was expected to play the 1st and 3rd Tests, with the 2nd, 4th, or 5th Tests left open depending on the series situation and his fitness. Given the 7–8 day gap between most Tests in the five-match series, this approach allows strategic recovery time.

Pacers Ready to Step Up

In Bumrah’s possible absence, Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep may be considered for the XI. Both had lengthy spells in the nets, with Arshdeep notably working with the old ball and bowling around the wicket to right-handers—possibly preparing for reverse swing under Edgbaston’s conditions.

The team’s approach remains steady despite the loss at Headingley, where India had moments of dominance. Coaches have emphasized continuity in style, encouraging players to replicate successful processes and capitalize better on match situations.

The squad also includes Prasidh Krishna, who joined Bumrah and Siraj for drills, though Bumrah’s lack of bowling suggests he may not feature just yet.
