IPL 2025: Dharamsala Airport Shutdown Affects DC and MI Travel Plans After ‘Operation Sindoor’

May 7, 2025: The IPL 2025 is facing significant logistical challenges after the closure of the Dharamsala airport due to heightened military tensions between India and Pakistan. The airport, one of 18 airbases shut down following India’s retaliatory missile strikes on terror hubs in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), has caused serious travel complications for IPL franchises scheduled to play in the region.

Punjab Kings (PBKS), who have Dharamsala as a secondary home base, are set to host Delhi Capitals (DC) on May 8 and Mumbai Indians (MI) on May 11. While players from PBKS and DC are already in Dharamsala and are not facing immediate travel disruptions, the closure has complicated Delhi Capitals’ plans, as they need to return home for their Sunday match.

The situation is exacerbated by the shutdown of Chandigarh airport, the nearest alternate hub, leaving limited options for the safe and timely movement of teams, players, and staff. Both the BCCI and the franchises are adopting a “wait and watch” approach, as the evolving military situation continues to affect travel logistics.

Sources revealed that one option for Delhi Capitals might be to travel by bus to Delhi, but this would pose a challenge not just for the teams but also for the broadcast crew and necessary equipment.

The airport closures are a result of India’s counter-terror operation following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians. As of now, there is no clear timeline for when the affected airports will reopen, leaving IPL franchises to navigate uncertainty in the lead-up to their matches.
