In IPL 2024, Gill had an impressive season, scoring 426 runs in 12 matches at a strike rate of 147.40, including one century and two fifties. Rashid Khan also made significant contributions, scoring 102 runs and taking 10 wickets with an economy rate of 8.40 in the same number of matches.

Speaking to Star Sports, Harbhajan noted that while the Gujarat Titans have six retention options, they are likely to keep 2 to 3 players. He mentioned that along with Gill and Rashid, Mohammad Shami should also be retained, and he speculated that David Miller might be the fourth player retained.

Despite their past success, having won the trophy in their debut season, the Titans struggled in IPL 2024, finishing eighth in the table with only five wins out of 14 matches. This strategic retention could be crucial as they look to rebuild and strengthen their squad for the upcoming season.
