April 15, 2025: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) bowling coach Eric Owen Simons heaped praise on veteran wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni for his calm presence, strategic mind, and impactful batting following CSK’s much-needed five-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the ongoing IPL 2025 season.
Dhoni, who smashed an unbeaten 26 off just 11 balls, including four boundaries and a six, played a crucial role in helping CSK chase down the target in the final over and snapping their five-match losing streak.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Simons highlighted Dhoni’s composed mindset and his immense contribution to the team beyond just runs.

“As I said, it hasn’t felt like a massive change because he’s always been there to give advice, give thoughts, give inputs. He’s a calming influence and provides a great understanding of how cricket should be played. His wisdom is tremendous,” Simons remarked.
He further praised Dhoni’s clinical finishing ability, stating,
“What did he score—29 today, six boundaries or whatever it was—his ability to hit the ball cleanly and play his game is exciting. We haven’t had the opportunity for him to slot in the way he did today… he decided to roll the dice, and he played extremely well.”
Simons, who has worked with Dhoni over the years, emphasized that the former India skipper’s impact goes far beyond technical coaching. His ability to inspire and support players with his calm demeanor and deep cricketing insight has made a lasting difference.
“I think we’ve all been privileged. I’ve been privileged to work with him for many years. His relationship with Rutu [Ruturaj Gaikwad], with Flem [Stephen Fleming], and all the players is very important. It’s not always about technical input—it’s the calmness, the presence, the way he plays the game that guides others,” Simons concluded.
Chennai will hope Dhoni’s return to form and his quiet leadership spark a resurgence in their IPL 2025 campaign.
