IPL 2025: Kane Williamson Highlights Shreyas Iyer’s Mastery Over Short-Pitched Deliveries

March 26, 2025: Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson praised Punjab Kings’ Shreyas Iyer for his exceptional technical evolution, particularly in overcoming short-pitched deliveries that had once been his nemesis. Iyer’s blistering 97* off 42 balls against Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2025 opener highlighted his newfound ability to dominate short-pitched bowling, a skill that had eluded him in previous seasons.

In an interview with Jio Hotstar, Williamson noted that Iyer’s performance was of the highest caliber. He was particularly impressed by Iyer’s ability to play the ball exactly where it needed to be hit, showing mastery over the offside and hitting sixes over cover against some of the best seamers in the world. Iyer’s shot-making against Rashid Khan, a top-tier spinner, was also noteworthy. Iyer expertly launched Rashid over long-on for a six, bringing up his fifty and continuing his assault with back-to-back sixes off short balls over deep mid-wicket.

Williamson highlighted Iyer’s adaptability, pointing out that his game had evolved significantly. Previously targeted by bowlers with short balls, Iyer had adjusted his technique, now going deeper into the crease and de-weighting his front leg to handle short-pitched deliveries with ease. This shift in his approach had turned short-pitched bowling from a weakness into a strength, with Iyer’s average against such deliveries soaring to 88 in 2025, coupled with a strike rate of 226.

The former New Zealand captain was full of praise for Iyer’s development, emphasizing that his ability to access all areas of the ground made him a formidable force. Williamson said, “What stands out is how he continues to evolve. He’s now able to deal with both the short and full deliveries, making him incredibly difficult to bowl to.”

Iyer’s knock set the tone for Punjab Kings’ innings, helping them post a formidable total of 243/5. Shashank Singh’s late fireworks, including five boundaries in the final over, ensured Punjab’s victory by 11 runs, successfully defending the massive total against Gujarat Titans.

Iyer’s performance has not only showcased his batting prowess but also highlighted his leadership, as he took on the opposition’s biggest threats with confidence. As he continues to evolve his game, Iyer is now seen as one of the most improved and well-rounded players in the T20 format.
