IPL 2025: Ravichandran Ashwin Becomes Fifth-Highest Wicket-Taker, Overtakes Sunil Narine

March 29, 2025: Ravichandran Ashwin, the seasoned Indian spinner, achieved a remarkable milestone in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 when he surpassed Sunil Narine to become the fifth-highest wicket-taker in IPL history. This feat came during the IPL match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Friday.

Ashwin reached the milestone after dismissing RCB’s Devdutt Padikkal, which pushed his total IPL wickets to 182, overtaking Narine’s tally of 181 wickets. Ashwin, who has played in 214 IPL matches, now has an impressive average of 29.79 and an economy rate of 7.13.

The Tamil Nadu cricketer’s IPL journey has seen him become an integral part of CSK’s success, contributing significantly to their victories in 2010 and 2011. After a 10-year absence, Ashwin made his much-awaited return to CSK in IPL 2025 for a substantial fee of Rs. 9.75 Crore. His vast experience in the shortest format, combined with his longstanding partnership with fellow spinner Ravindra Jadeja, is expected to play a crucial role in CSK’s campaign this season.

Ashwin’s wicket of Padikkal came during the eighth match of the ongoing season at MA Chidambaram Stadium. Despite an initial challenge where RCB’s Phil Salt took Ashwin for two fours and a six in the second over, the veteran spinner made his mark by removing Padikkal. Padikkal’s quick-fire innings of 27 runs from 14 balls, which included two fours and two sixes, was cut short by a brilliant catch from CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.

CSK’s bowling attack in the match was well-rounded, with Noor Ahmad being the standout performer, taking 3 wickets for 36 runs. Pathirana contributed with two wickets, and both Ashwin and Khaleel Ahmed claimed one wicket each.

The Chennai Super Kings team, which opted to field first after winning the toss, was led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, with Ashwin playing a key role in the spin department. On the other hand, RCB’s batting lineup struggled against CSK’s bowlers, with Padikkal’s early dismissal helping CSK maintain control of the match.

This milestone is another testament to Ashwin’s longevity and success in the IPL, cementing his place as one of the league’s premier spinners. As the IPL 2025 season progresses, Ashwin will be looking to further contribute to CSK’s quest for another title, as his experience and leadership in the spin department remain invaluable.
