IPL 2025: Rinku Singh Discusses Learning From West Indies All-Rounder Russell And The 300-Run Milestone

Ahead of Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) IPL clash against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at Eden Gardens, batter Rinku Singh shared valuable insights into his journey and approach to the game. In a conversation with JioHotstar on ‘Gen Bold’, Rinku spoke about learning from cricketing legends like MS Dhoni and Andre Russell, and his belief in the evolving nature of the game, including the possibility of a team breaching the 300-run mark in an IPL match for the first time.

Rinku, who is often utilized as a finisher for KKR, typically bats at number five or six in the batting order. He reflected on the role, stating that he’s accustomed to it, having played in similar positions for Uttar Pradesh as well. He emphasized the importance of fitness to stay competitive throughout the 14-match IPL season. “I focus a lot on fitness because with 14 matches in the IPL, it’s my responsibility to maintain my body and recover well,” Rinku said.

When asked about his conversations with MS Dhoni, Rinku shared that he often speaks with the legendary wicketkeeper-batter, who advises him to stay calm and play according to the match situation. “Mahi Bhai tells me to stay calm and play according to the match situation. Things fall into place when you stay composed,” he added.

Rinku also spoke about observing Andre Russell, KKR’s power-hitting stalwart, and picking up key lessons from him. “I observe Russell closely, especially how he bats in the final overs, and how he uses his body to generate power. I keep watching and picking up things from him,” Rinku explained. Russell, known for his destructive batting, has been a key figure for KKR, and Rinku sees him as a role model for power-hitting in the latter stages of an innings.

With the game constantly evolving, Rinku expressed his belief that IPL matches could soon see teams crossing the 300-run mark. Citing the example of Punjab Kings’ impressive chase of 262 runs last season, he said, “Yes, we can do it. IPL has reached a stage where even 300 is possible; last year, Punjab chased a total of 262 runs. All teams are strong this season—anyone can get to 300.”

As for his own performance in IPL 2025, Rinku has been in decent form, accumulating 133 runs in seven innings, with an average of 33.25 and a strike rate of 146.15, including a best score of 38*. He will be looking to contribute more to KKR’s cause as they aim to climb up the points table.

KKR, who have won only three of their eight matches so far, will face a tough challenge against PBKS, who sit comfortably in the fifth spot with 10 points. With both teams eager for a win, the match promises to be an exciting contest at Eden Gardens.
