IPL 2025: Shane Watson Suggests MS Dhoni Should Have Batted Higher After CSK's Loss To RCB At Chepauk
March 29, 2025: In the aftermath of Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, former Australian cricketer and CSK legend Shane Watson voiced his opinion on MS Dhoni’s batting position, suggesting that the star wicketkeeper-batter should have been promoted higher up the order.
CSK suffered a 50-run defeat to RCB at their home ground, Chepauk Stadium, on Friday. One of the major talking points from the match was Dhoni’s late entry to the crease. The CSK captain came in to bat at number nine with his team at 99/7 in the 15.2 over mark, chasing a target of 197 runs. Dhoni’s late cameo of 30* from 16 balls, which included three fours and two sixes, entertained fans but was not enough to turn the game in CSK’s favor.
In a conversation on ‘Match Centre Live’ on JioHotstar, Watson expressed his belief that Dhoni should have batted ahead of Ravichandran Ashwin, who was promoted to number eight. “This is exactly what CSK fans come to see–30 off 16 deliveries from Dhoni. I would have absolutely loved to see him come up the order. In my opinion, he should have batted ahead of Ashwin,” Watson stated.
He further explained that with the game situation in mind, Dhoni could have provided a much-needed boost had he batted higher in the order. “Given the game situation, Dhoni could have played like this for another 15 balls. Over the last couple of years, he has consistently shown that he is still batting beautifully. I truly believe he should be promoted up the order so we can see the full extent of his skills.”
Watson also highlighted Dhoni’s sharp wicketkeeping skills, noting that his quick reflexes were a testament to his fitness and preparedness. “From a wicket-keeping perspective, he is still as sharp as ever—whipping the bails off in an instant. That tells me his game is in great shape.”
While Watson applauded Dhoni’s quick-fire cameo, he was also critical of some of CSK’s other decisions during the game. He specifically pointed out the unusual opening combination of Rahul Tripathi and Rachin Ravindra, with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad pushed down to number three. “One of the shots Ruturaj played—where he gave himself room against Hazlewood—was uncharacteristic. Normally, he stands still and reacts, but this showed he was under pressure.”
Watson also expressed concern over Deepak Hooda’s current form, stating that he was not playing with confidence and seemed to be trying to survive each ball. “Right now, Deepak Hooda is just not up to it; he played each ball as if he was trying to survive.”
Lastly, Watson questioned the decision to bat Sam Curran at number five, suggesting that the all-rounder might be better suited for a lower batting position. “Batting Sam Curran at number 5 was also questionable—I see him as more of a number seven batter,” he added.
Watson concluded that CSK’s current batting line-up has not been balanced properly and could be exposed if they continue with the same combinations. “If they persist with this batting line-up, they risk being exposed.”
With several adjustments suggested by Watson, it remains to be seen whether CSK will tweak their strategy as they look to bounce back in the tournament.
