IPL 2025: Shreyas Iyer Moves to Second Spot In Orange Cap Race with Unbeaten Half-Century

April 2, 2025: Shreyas Iyer’s impressive form has seen him rise rapidly in the race for the IPL 2025 Orange Cap, jumping from 14th place to second after his unbeaten 52 in Punjab Kings’ successful run chase against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

The Punjab Kings captain is now a strong contender for the coveted title, although LSG’s Nicholas Pooran continues to hold the top spot. Pooran, who missed out on a half-century against PBKS in LSG’s first home game of the season, was dismissed by leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal after scoring 44 runs off 30 balls, including five fours and two sixes.

Mitchell Marsh, who was a close contender, had a chance to extend his lead but was dismissed for a golden duck by left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh. Despite this, the Australian all-rounder still remains in the top five.

Changes Expected After RCB vs GT Clash

As Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) face Gujarat Titans (GT), several changes in the standings are expected. GT’s young opener Sai Sudharsan, currently the only GT batter in the top five, has a chance to overtake Pooran for the top spot. Sudharsan needs just 53 more runs to move into first place. Meanwhile, GT’s wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler (93 runs) and captain Shubman Gill (71 runs) also have a chance to break into the top five if they perform well in the away game.

RCB, despite having no players in the top 10, have three prominent batters—Virat Kohli (90 runs), Phil Salt (88 runs), and captain Rajat Patidar (88 runs)—who could make a significant jump. With their first home game of the season at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, known for its batting-friendly pitch and short boundaries, these players have an excellent opportunity to climb up the Orange Cap rankings if they continue their strong form.
