IPL 2025: Shubman Gill Fined for Slow Over-Rate After Win Over Delhi Capitals
April 20, 2025: In Match 35 of the ongoing IPL 2025, Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill was fined following his team’s violation of the slow over-rate rule during their high-scoring match against Delhi Capitals (DC) at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on Saturday. According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, the fine was imposed after the Titans were found to have exceeded the time limit for completing their overs.
This isn’t the first time in the current season that captains have faced penalties for slow over-rates. Earlier in the tournament, captains like Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians), Riyan Parag (Rajasthan Royals), Rishabh Pant (Lucknow Super Giants), Rajat Patidar (Royal Challengers Bangalore), Sanju Samson (Rajasthan Royals), and Axar Patel (Delhi Capitals) have also been fined for the same issue.
Despite this setback, Gujarat Titans delivered a dominant performance in the match, chasing down Delhi Capitals’ (DC) target of 204 with ease. The high-octane clash saw Jos Buttler in scintillating form, leading his side to a comfortable seven-wicket victory. Buttler’s 97 off 54 balls* was the cornerstone of Gujarat’s successful chase, backed up by a solid 40 off 30 balls from Sherfane Rutherford.
Earlier, DC had posted a competitive total of 203/8, thanks to a solid start from KL Rahul and Abhishek Porel, followed by an explosive knock from Ashutosh Sharma in the final overs. However, it was Buttler’s brilliance that made the difference, as the England star continued his fiery form and kept the DC bowlers at bay.
As the chase progressed, Rutherford, who came in as the impact substitute, played a crucial role in shifting the momentum in Gujarat’s favor. His 40 runs ensured the Titans were comfortably on track to win. To seal the deal, Rahul Tewatia delivered a flashy cameo, hitting a huge six off the first ball of the final over and then racing to the boundary with a four to finish the game in style.
With this win, Gujarat Titans climbed to the top of the IPL 2025 points table, with their fifth victory in seven matches, pushing Delhi Capitals to second place. The Capitals, despite a good fight with the bat, faced their second loss in the tournament, while the Titans’ all-round effort ensured they emerged victorious once again.
As Gujarat Titans continue their climb to the summit, their win over DC further strengthens their position in the competition. On the other hand, Delhi will look to bounce back and address the slow over-rate and other key issues ahead of their next match.
