Is Jofra Archer the X-Factor England Needs vs India?

June 22, 2025: In a major boost for England’s Test hopes, pace spearhead Jofra Archer is on track for a red-ball return and could feature in the second Test against India. The 30-year-old has been named in Sussex’s squad for their upcoming county match against Durham — marking his first red-ball outing since May 2021.

Archer’s Test career was stalled by a string of injuries, but he recently returned to action in white-ball cricket, playing for England in the 2025 Champions Trophy. Now, England selectors are hopeful his county comeback is a stepping stone toward a Test return.

“He’s had a horrific time with injuries, but it’s exciting for England — and even more so for Jof — that he’s finally in a position where he could be considered for Test cricket again,” said England selector Luke Wright.

The timing of Archer’s return couldn’t be better. In the ongoing series, India dominated the first two days of the first Test. Centuries from Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rishabh Pant powered India to a formidable 471 in the first innings, exposing England’s bowling attack.

While Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue impressed with four wickets each, England clearly lacked the firepower to trouble India’s top order. Archer’s return could provide the extra pace and aggression England desperately needs heading into the second Test.
