Root overtook Cook’s tally of 12,472 runs when he reached 71 runs in England’s second innings, marking the achievement with a single off Pakistan’s spinner Abrar Ahmed. At that point, Root stood at 12,473 runs, placing him as England’s top Test run-getter.

Root’s remarkable record came in his 146th Test match and 267th innings since debuting against India in 2012. With an average of 50.62 and 34 centuries, including 5 double centuries, Root has been a cornerstone of England’s success in the longest format.
