Pak Stadiums in Poor State; ICC CEO Steps Down Amid Champions Trophy Concerns

Uncertainty looms over Pakistan’s readiness to host the marquee tournament as ICC CEO Geoff Allardice resigns weeks before the event.

January 29, 2025: Geoff Allardice, the Chief Executive Officer of the International Cricket Council (ICC), has stepped down from his position just weeks before the much-anticipated Champions Trophy. The 57-year-old announced his decision in an official statement, citing the need to pursue “new challenges.” However, reports suggest that concerns over Pakistan’s lack of preparedness to host the tournament played a significant role in his resignation.

“It has been a privilege to serve as the Chief Executive Officer of the ICC, and I am incredibly proud of the results we have achieved, from enhancing the global reach of cricket to strengthening the commercial foundation for ICC members,” Allardice said in his statement.

Pakistan’s Readiness in Question

The Champions Trophy is set to begin on February 19, with matches scheduled in both Pakistan and Dubai. However, images from venues in Karachi and Rawalpindi reveal partially constructed or under-renovation facilities, raising doubts about their readiness. The situation has reportedly created tension within the ICC, especially as Pakistan prepares to host the event after 12 years.

A top ICC source, speaking anonymously, stated, “Geoff was expected to present a clear picture of Pakistan’s readiness to host a tournament of this magnitude, but concerns over the venue conditions have added to the mounting issues.”

Challenges Under Allardice’s Tenure

Allardice’s resignation comes after a series of challenges during his tenure, including the underwhelming ICC T20 World Cup in the United States, which exceeded its budget and faced criticism over playing conditions. These events have cast a shadow over the ICC’s planning and operational effectiveness.

The Champions Trophy will feature the world’s top eight teams, with India’s matches moved to Dubai due to security concerns in Pakistan. Despite these logistical adjustments, the spotlight remains on Pakistan’s ability to deliver a successful event.

Praise from ICC Chair Jay Shah

ICC Chair Jay Shah expressed gratitude for Allardice’s contributions, stating, “Geoff’s leadership and commitment during his tenure have been invaluable. His efforts have played a key role in advancing cricket globally. We wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”

Exodus of ICC Officials

Allardice’s departure is the latest in a series of resignations at the ICC. Key officials, including Chris Tetley (Head of Events), Alex Marshall (Head of the Anti-Corruption Unit), and Claire Furlong (Head of Marketing and Media), have also stepped down in recent months.

As the ICC begins its search for Allardice’s successor, the focus shifts to ensuring that the Champions Trophy is executed smoothly despite the challenges. With less than a month to go, all eyes will be on Pakistan’s efforts to meet the expectations of this prestigious event.
