Sri Lankan cricket legend Sanath Jayasuriya, now confirmed as the country’s head coach until March 2026, emphasized the critical role of “confidence and trust” in the team’s recent successes.
After being appointed as the interim coach following Chris Silverwood’s departure post the 2024 T20 World Cup, Jayasuriya’s leadership saw immediate positive results, including victories over England and New Zealand in Tests, and a successful ODI series against India.
Jayasuriya pointed out that the Sri Lankan team had previously been lacking in these key areas, but he was able to instill a sense of belief in the players. He also acknowledged that a bit of luck played a role in their revival. He described how he encouraged players to discuss any issues openly, fostering a supportive environment. The cricketers, according to him, are talented but needed the confidence to perform at their best.
This extension means Jayasuriya will lead Sri Lanka into key upcoming tournaments, including the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy and potentially the World Test Championship final in 2026.
