“Separated Since 2022”: Yuzvendra Chahal, Dhanashree Verma Officially Granted Divorce by Mutual Consent

After nearly three years of marriage, the couple cited irreconcilable differences and filed a joint petition. The Bombay High Court waived the mandatory cooling-off period, considering Chahal’s IPL schedule.

Mumbai, March 21, 2025 — Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma are now officially divorced, following a joint petition granted by the Bandra family court on Thursday. The decree was passed after the court acknowledged full compliance with consent terms, marking the end of their marriage that began in December 2020.

As per the petition, the couple had been living separately since June 2022, and filed for divorce by mutual consent on February 5, 2025.

Chahal’s lawyer Nitin Gupta confirmed the update, stating, “The family court has accepted the joint petition filed by Chahal and Verma seeking divorce by mutual consent.”

IPL Commitment Speeds Up Court Process

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) commencing on March 22, and Chahal being a part of Punjab Kings, the Bombay High Court intervened on Wednesday, urging the family court to fast-track the decision. The court also waived the mandatory six-month cooling-off period—typically observed under the Hindu Marriage Act—as reconciliation was deemed unlikely.

Earlier, the family court had denied the waiver, citing partial compliance of consent terms. The terms included a permanent alimony settlement of Rs 4.75 crore, out of which Rs 2.37 crore had been paid. The rest was to be paid post-divorce decree, which the High Court acknowledged as a valid stipulation in the consent agreement.

Background and Legal Battle

The couple approached the High Court challenging the lower court’s refusal to waive the cooling period. The HC ruled in their favour, allowing the family court to issue a verdict ahead of IPL’s start. The court also noted that a marriage counsellor’s report indicated no further scope for reconciliation.
