Shocking Exit! Nicholas Pooran Retires From All International Formats at 29
Port of Spain, June 10:
In a move that has stunned the cricketing world, West Indies wicketkeeper-batsman Nicholas Pooran, 29, has announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket. Pooran, regarded as one of the most explosive T20 batters of the modern era, confirmed he will continue to play franchise cricket globally but will no longer represent the West Indies in Tests, ODIs or T20Is.
Pooran’s decision follows closely on the heels of South African keeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen’s retirement last week, raising broader concerns about the sustainability of international cricket amidst the growing lure of global leagues.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Pooran wrote:
“After much thought and reflection, I’ve decided to announce my retirement from international cricket. This game we love has given so much — joy, purpose, unforgettable memories, and a chance to represent the people of the West Indies.”
He expressed deep gratitude toward his fans, teammates, and the West Indies Cricket Board, adding:
“To have led the team as captain is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart… Though this international chapter of my career closes, my love for West Indies Cricket will never fade.”
Pooran retires as West Indies’ most-capped T20I player, having featured in 106 matches and scoring a team-record 2,275 runs in the format. Known for his clean hitting and calm demeanour under pressure, he had also briefly captained the national team in white-ball formats.
Despite his talent and promise, Pooran’s career coincided with a turbulent era for West Indies cricket, marked by player-board disputes and inconsistent performances. His retirement at the peak of his powers is a growing sign of elite cricketers prioritising financially lucrative franchise leagues over the pressures and politics of international cricket.
Pooran’s exit contributes to a growing list of players turning away from national duty in favour of T20 leagues, highlighting the tug-of-war between traditional cricket structures and the franchise economy.
His decision will inevitably fuel discussions about the future of West Indies cricket and whether governing bodies worldwide can evolve their frameworks to retain top talent.
Pooran is expected to continue his career with various T20 franchises, including in the IPL, CPL, and other international leagues. He remains a prized asset in the shortest format of the game.
