February 13, 2025: Colombo: Sri Lanka delivered a stunning performance to defeat Australia by 49 runs in the 1st ODI of the two-match series at R. Premadasa Stadium. Charith Asalanka led the charge with a career-best 127 off 126 balls, while Maheesh Theekshana’s brilliant 4/40 dismantled the Australian batting lineup, restricting them to 165 all out in pursuit of 215.

Asalanka Anchors Sri Lanka’s Innings

Batting first, Sri Lanka found themselves in trouble early as the top order collapsed. However, captain Charith Asalanka stepped up, playing a remarkable innings to hold the innings together. His 127-run masterclass guided Sri Lanka to 214 all out in 46 overs, with Dunith Wellalage (30) providing the only significant support.

Despite the modest total, Asalanka remained confident at the halfway stage, stating,
“It was a tricky wicket to bat on, but I believed our bowlers could defend this total.”

Theekshana, Bowlers Dominate Australia’s Chase

Australia started their chase cautiously but failed to build partnerships. Theekshana’s mystery spin and early breakthroughs set the tone, with the visitors crumbling under pressure.
