Stephen Fleming Explains MS Dhoni’s Batting Position, Cites Fitness Concerns, Says “His Knees Aren’t What They Used To Be..”

March 31, 2025: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming has addressed the ongoing discussion regarding MS Dhoni’s batting position, emphasizing that it is all about timing and fitness. In a recent press conference, Fleming revealed that the legendary wicketkeeper-batter’s knee issues have impacted his ability to play long innings, prompting him to take up a more strategic role in the batting lineup.

MS Dhoni’s position in the CSK batting order has been a topic of intense discussion, particularly after his late arrival at No. 9 in the loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). The move drew criticism from both fans and analysts. However, Dhoni’s entry at No. 7 against Rajasthan Royals, where he contributed 16 runs off 11 balls in a closely contested match, demonstrated his still-prominent role in the team, even if his appearance was late in the game.

Fleming explained that Dhoni’s decision-making regarding his batting position is driven by his body’s limitations, specifically his knees, which are not as resilient as they once were. The 43-year-old assesses his fitness on a game-by-game basis, adjusting his entry based on the situation and his ability to contribute.

“Yeah, it’s a time thing. MS judges it. His body is, his knees aren’t what they used to be. And he’s moving okay, but there’s still an attrition aspect to it. He can’t bat 10 overs running full stick. So he will gauge on the day what he can give us. If the game’s in the balance like today, he will go a little bit earlier, and he backs other players when other opportunities are up. So he’s balancing that,” Fleming said, reflecting on Dhoni’s approach to managing his physical limitations while still having a major impact on the team.

Fleming also highlighted that despite Dhoni’s reduced batting role, his leadership and wicketkeeping remain invaluable to CSK, which is why he continues to be a key figure for the franchise. “He’s too valuable to us—leadership and wicket-keeping—to throw him in nine, ten overs. He has actually never done that. So, look, from around 13-14 overs, he’s looking to go depending on who’s in,” Fleming added.

CSK will next play at home against the Delhi Capitals on April 5, where Dhoni’s leadership and strategic batting will continue to be crucial to the team’s success.
